Requirements :

  • Requirements include a Grade 12 certificate, plus an appropriate qualification that allows registration with HPCSA as an independent medical practitioner, MMed (Paediatrics) or FCPaed (SA), and registration as a Medical Specialist Paediatrician with the HPCSA for April 2025–March 2026. At least three (3) years of relevant experience post-registration are required, along with proven clinical management experience in hospital and academic settings, teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students, research and peer-reviewed publications, and familiarity with government regulations. Candidates should demonstrate strong administrative, interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, organizational, and collaborative abilities. This post is a joint appointment with the University of Pretoria (Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Paediatrics and Child Health) and Steve Biko Academic Hospital. The incumbent will be responsible for providing leadership in clinical service delivery, teaching, research, and academic administration within the field of Paediatrics and Child Health. Experience in teaching and learning, supervision of postgraduate students, evidence in research and publications in peer reviewed journals.

Duties :

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health in academic and hospital settings. Ensure high clinical standards, patient safety, and compliance with governance requirements. Supervise clinical and administrative staff. Promote teaching and training for students and trainees and drive research and postgraduate supervision. Manage human and financial resources efficiently. Foster effective communication with management, departments, and external stakeholders including district primary health care services. Represent the Unit on committees and contribute to policy, service planning, and improvement initiatives. Report to the Chief executive officer and Clinical Manager. Lead after-hours emergency response and perform diagnostic, therapeutic, and equipment quality control procedures. Oversee clinical associate students’ supervision and training.

Candidates in possession of a foreign qualification will be required to furnish the Department with an evaluation certificate from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
