Requirements :

  • Grade 12 and a Bachelor’s degree in social work. Registration with the professional statutory body, South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) and proof of current registration. Grade 1: No experience required. Grade 2: A minimum of 10 years appropriate experience in social work after registration with the SACSSP as Social Worker. Grade 3: A minimum of 20 years appropriate experience as in social work after registration with the SACSSP as Social Worker. A valid South African Driver’s Licence. Computer literacy. Knowledge of public service legislation and policy framework and the Social Work profession applicable to the health sector. Knowledge of the Mental Health Care Act 17 of 2002. Experience in mental health and working in a hospital or clinic will be an added advantage. Ability to work in a multidisciplinary context. Good verbal and written communication skills.

Duties :

  • Provide therapeutic services to mental health care users and their families, including crisis intervention and psychosocial containment. Render integrated and specialized individual, group and community work services within a multidisciplinary setting. Conduct tracing of families and caregivers, facilitate placement in alternative care facilities and liaise with various stakeholders to trace unknown mental health care users. Undertake home visits and visits to alternative care facilities such as NGOs and contracted care centers to assess suitability for discharge and placement. Establish intersectoral platforms with key local stakeholders such as SASSA, SAPS, Dept of Home Affairs, amongst others. Capture profession specific records and statistical and other data and compile relevant reports. Participate in ward round and ward meetings. Provide health education, promotion, prevention and awareness activities relevant to mental health settings.
