Senior/National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, DA plus MMed (Anaes) or FCA (SA). Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Anaesthesiology with minimum of five (5) years appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist in Anaesthesiology. Extensive and appropriate experience in all aspects of Anaesthesiology - clinical care, teaching, and research. Proven management ability, sound communication(verbal and written) skills, leadership skills, decision making and interpersonal skills. Proof of current registration with the HPCSA from 01 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. The candidate should be able to demonstrate the following skills: problem solving ,decision making, strong leadership, sound communication. Experience in teaching and learning, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. This is a joint appointment between the University of Pretoria (Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Anaesthesiology) and Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

The Department of Anaesthesiology is based at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and affiliated with the University of Pretoria. This is a joint academic, full-time, permanent appointment. The Head of Clinical Unit will provide operational, academic, and clinical leadership within the Anaesthesiology service in the hospital and university platforms. The role includes ensuring high-quality, safe, evidence-based anaesthetic care; supporting perioperative services; strengthening clinical governance; and ensuring compliance with national standards and institutional protocols. The post includes coordinating teaching and training for undergraduate and postgraduate students, including registrars, and contributing to departmental research. Duties may include after-hours call, theatre cover, ICU support, and other service responsibilities as required.
