Requirements :

  • Appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in a normal speciality or a recognised sub-speciality. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in a normal speciality or in a recognised sub-specialty and proof of current registration. A minimum of 3 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in a normal Specialty or in a recognized sub-specialty.

Duties :

  • Oversee the provision of a comprehensive Medical Oncology Clinical Service providing the assessment, management and counselling of patients with solid organ and haematological malignancies regarding their diagnosis, stage, prognosis and treatment options. Overseeing the referrals to potential Clinical Trials and Genetic Counselling Services. Active involvement in facilitating the effect running of Clinic activities to assist in effective patient flows. Involvement in Multidisciplinary Tumour Meetings with Departments of Surgery, Radiology, Clinical Haematology, Pathology, Gynaecology and Palliative Care. Provision of expert opinion in formulating treatment plans for complicated patients and facilitating cross referral and review of patients between Division, Disciplines and Cluster Hospitals. Triaging of new case referrals to the Medical Oncology Services and committing to maintain an appropriate waiting time for entering into the Clinic based on clinical urgency, with urgent cases seen within a week and advanced/palliative cases within 3-4 weeks. Supervision of Clinical Conduct and Communication between staff in Medical Oncology Out and In-patient Service. Dealing with conflict resolution between colleagues, allied healthcare workers, administrative staff and patients. Ensure Division Outreach to secondary level cluster hospital with facilitation of up referral of patients requiring Oncological care and the down referral of patients to secondary level hospitals once tertiary care has been optimized. Active involvement and facilitation of Undergraduate teaching and examination as well as Post graduate teaching of Registrars in Department of Medicine, Registrars in Department of Radiation Oncology and Fellows in the Division of Medical Oncology.
