Requirements :

  • Grade 12 with appropriate qualification(degree) that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in the relevant profession as Medical Specialist in Pediatrics. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Pediatrics. A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Paediatrics. M Med (Pediatrics). Fellowship in pediatrics (FC Paed SA ). A qualification in community pediatrics’ is an added advantage. Appropriate experience in public sector pediatrics services. Knowledge of clinical discipline, and relevant legislation regulations and policies. Quality assurance and improvement programmes. Health Information management. Human resources and financial management. Skills: Leadership, communication, working in teams, and problem-solving. Computer literacy is essential. Behavioral attributes: Stress tolerance, and objective, ethical, empathic clinical expertise in pediatrics’. Proven leadership and mentorship capability. Knowledge of district health systems and primary healthcare services. Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills. Commitment to equity and service delivery excellence.

Duties :

  • : Represent the specialist discipline as a member of a District Clinical Specialist Team responsible for the delivery of quality health care for neonates and children at all levels within a health district. Provide clinical leadership, supports the implementation of national neonatal and child health policies. Strengthen quality of care through clinical governance, audits, and mortality reviews. Mentor and supervise medical officers, nurses, and therapeutic care services professionals. Be active in monitoring child health indicators and data-driven service improvement. Participate in outreach services to primary healthcare facilities and district hospital. Collaborate for better health outcomes with regional and tertiary hospitals in the district. Promote equitable access to an appropriate level of care for all neonates and children throughout the district. Maintain personal competency in own clinical discipline, whilst ensuring that 20% of time is spent on clinical care or academic work at the hospital and 80% on activities within the district. Support service delivery: Working with clinics, community health centres and district hospitals with all aspects of service delivery related to own specialist discipline. Promoting clinical effectiveness in all facilities through supporting outreach programmes, development, dissemination or implementation of clinical protocols and standard treatment guidelines aligned with national norms and standards. Provide education and training: Active participation in the development, training and mentorship of health professionals in PHC and district hospital facilities within the district. Facilitate and participate in the training, development and mentorship of under- and post-graduate medical, nursing and therapeutic care service professionals. Participate in ESMOE training, IMCI, and all childcare related training. Health systems and logistics: Work with the District Management Team to Support surveillance, health information, communication and referral guidelines and processes to for better delivery of services. Motivate for appropriate equipment, resources and sundries for the provision of quality clinical care. Monitor and evaluate services: Actively participate in risk management activities involving patients, (e.g. critical event analysis, morbidity and mortality meetings, PPIP and Child PIP with the district services and hospitals), practitioners, (e.g. infection control), and the organisation, (e.g. performance reviews, clinical audits and quality improvement). Implement effective monitoring and evaluation processes, effective use of data and appropriate reporting on outputs and health outcomes, and research. Collaborate, communicate and report effectively: Foster teamwork and collaboration within the district specialist team. Enable engagement with the local community and relevant non-Government organisations, communication with management structures, at all levels. Support organisational activities: Assist with strategic and operational planning of services and assist with the co-ordination and supervision of the discipline-related services within the district.
