Appropriate medical qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as a specialist physician, anaesthetist, surgeon or emergency medicine specialist with recognised training or experience in Critical Care / Intensive Care Medicine. A subspecialty qualification in Critical Care will be an added advantage. Competencies: Excellent communication skill, good professional judgement, integrity, and professional dependability. conflict management resolution. Technology and computer skills. Leadership experience. Cost containment. Problem solving skills. Coaching and mentoring experience. Strong focus on developing and implementing research ETHOS. Patient centred approach mentality. The candidate must demonstrate: Critical Care / ICU Expertise. Ability to manage critically ill patients requiring advanced organ support. Experience in mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, renal replacement therapy and advanced critical care procedures. Ability to further develop and strengthen ICU clinical services. Multidisciplinary Collaboration. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team including physicians, surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing staff, allied health professionals and support services.
Duties :

The incumbent will be responsible for the clinical management of critically ill patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Helen Joseph Hospital. Responsibilities include: Leading daily ICU ward rounds and multidisciplinary case discussions. Management of patients requiring advanced organ support including ventilation, vasopressor therapy, renal replacement therapy and invasive monitoring. Providing specialist consultation for critically ill patients referred from other departments including Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and Surgical disciplines. Participation in ICU admission triage and escalation of care decisions. Supervision of advanced procedures including central venous access, arterial line insertion, airway management and critical care interventions. As a senior clinician, the incumbent will: Supervise registrars, medical officers, interns and students in critical care management. Participate in after-hours ICU coverage as part of the consultant rotation. Contribute to morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical governance and patient safety initiatives. The candidate will be expected to serve as a clinical leader, mentor and role model for junior doctors and ICU staff. Subspeciality Development: The incumbent will assist in: Coordination and strengthening of Critical Care services at Helen Joseph Hospital. Development of referral pathways for critically ill patients within the cluster hospitals. Implementation of ICU protocols and best-practice guidelines. Collaboration with surgical, medical and emergency departments in the management of critically ill patients. Academic: Participation in the academic programme of the University of the Witwatersrand Department of Internal Medicine / Critical Care platform, including: Participation in academic ward rounds and departmental meetings. Contribution to research and publication within the department. Supervision of registrar and MMed research projects. The incumbent is expected to complete his Certification in Critical Care within 4 years of taking up the post. Teaching: Active participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including: Training and supervision of Senior Registrars, Registrars, Medical Officers, Medical Interns and Medical Students. Teaching ward rounds, tutorials and bedside clinical training. Mentorship of junior clinicians in critical care practice. The candidate will also provide clinical guidance and support to ICU nursing staff and allied health professionals. Management: The incumbent will participate in managerial and administrative functions within the ICU and Department of Internal Medicine including: Participation in hospital management and clinical governance committees. Contribution to ICU operational planning and service delivery. Development of duty rosters ensuring continuous ICU coverage. Participation in quality improvement and clinical governance initiatives.
