Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s in optometry (4 years) qualification. Active, current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an independent practitioner Optometrist with Ocular Diagnostic Privileges. Valid driver’s license. Strong clinical skills and ethics, theoretical knowledge, and conversant with eye care procedures and guidelines. Competencies (knowledge/ skills): Good interpersonal, communication, planning and organisational skills, and computer literacy (MS Office). Knowledge of applicable health legislation, relevant acts and policies. Ability to adapt and work efficiently in a resource-constrained environment.

Duties :

  • Provide eye care services at allocated Primary Health Care facilities in adherence to the scope of practice and health protocols. Perform comprehensive eye and visual examinations. Provide educate and counsel patients on overall eye care and hygiene, contact lens & low vision care, visual hygiene, lighting arrangements and safety factors. Investigate, analyse test results and develop a treatment and management plan. Prescribe therapeutic procedures to correct or conserve vision and eye health. The official should be able to work in collaboration with other stake holders. Organise, participate and assist in public health outreach, awareness campaigns and trainings for community and HCWs within the district. Study, interpret, apply, and give information on legislation and policies in the identified work fields. Engage in continuous professional development and in service training and adhere to PMDS. Liaise and attend meetings with other internal and external stake holders. Get involved in research and development in the district and province. Perform all administrative functions: complete daily and monthly statistics and other delegated tasks. Compile monthly reports. Maintain physical and or electronic records. Maintain equipments.
