Requirements :

  • Appropriate qualification that allows for the required registration with the Health Professional Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in Speech Therapy or Speech Therapy and Audiology. Registration with the HPCSA in Speech Therapy or Speech Therapy and Audiology. A minimum of 3 years appropriate experience in Speech Therapy or Speech Therapy and Audiology after registration with the HPCSA as an Independent Practitioner. Knowledge: Speech-language therapy evidence-based care. Public Service Act and Regulations. Public Financial Management Act. Quality Assurance. Labour relations: Disciplinary and Conflict Management Procedures. Skills: Communication (written and verbal), interpersonal and listening skills. Ability to work under pressure in a challenging environment. Problem solving and leadership skills. Ability to lead a team and work as a team member, planning, organising, coordinating and problem-solving Computer Literacy. Research skills. The following will be an added advantage: Leadership experience, Experience in management of speech, language, communication and feeding difficulties in the adult population. Working experience in a hospital environment.

Duties :

  • To coordinate and provide effective speech therapy services to adult and paediatric in and outpatients. Manage and lead a team of (3 to 5 speech therapists) within the speech therapy and audiology department. To be responsible for the management of the adult speech therapy services: ensure the implementation and review of evidence- based protocols and procedures, clinical monitoring of service provision, the ongoing development of services, managing waiting list, monitoring team members performance with the Performance Management and Development System (contracting, quarterly reviews, and final assessments). Participate and lead evaluation, planning and problem solving of services, monitor and issuing of resources, identification of needs of therapeutic programmes and the execution thereof. Ensure quality/ risk management and control. Compliancy and monitoring teams’ compliance with hospital and department policies: managing resources appropriately, contributing to service evaluation and improvement, implementing new services, monthly statistic, reports, maintaining personal growth (CPD), student supervision, record keeping and participation in all departmental, cluster, hospital and provincial activities. Appropriate budgeting and provide input on the demand plan. Monitor, improve and report on the quality of teamwork. Liaising with internal and external stakeholders. Provide mentoring to team members, identify training needs of and implement skills development programme. Collect and analyse data and contribute research. To work within an MDT approach including attendance and participation meetings and ward rounds. To provide and monitor: education and counselling to patients, families and the public. Reportable to the assistant director of speech therapy.
