Requirements :

  • Four-year degree in Environmental Health, Registration with the Health Professional Council of Southern African as an independent practitioner. 5 years’ experience as an Environmental Health Practitioner post comserve A minimum of 3 years appropriate experience in a managerial position. Knowledge and understanding of the scope of profession for Environmental Health Practitioners. Knowledge of departmental policies and strategic plans Public Service protocols and Public Finance Management Act. Must have a valid driver’s Licence. Competencies. Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Excell and power point presentation. Ability to work in a team, after hours, holidays including weekend and under pressure in changing environment. Good financial management skills and knowledge of PFMA. Project management skill. Written and verbal communication skills. Leadership and management skills.

Duties :

  • Monitor and control environmental health hazards to protect public health. Promote proper waste management, including solid and liquid waste disposal. Ensure safe water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) standards in communities and institutions. Conduct environmental inspections and enforce public health and environmental regulations. Monitor and coordinate the implementation of Climate change and Health Adaptation and mitigation programmes. Monitor and coordinate the implementation of Climate change and Health Adaptation plan. Monitor the implementation of environmental pollution control (indoor, ambient, noise) programmes by district and Municipalities. Participate on intergovernmental activities to ensure integration and consideration of human health aspects in other government sectors policies, plans and programmes. Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to build capacity of environmental health practitioners in provinces and municipalities on the implementation of environmental pollution programmes. Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to build capacity of provinces and municipalities on the implementation of climate change and health programmes. Coordinate outbreak response. Assess and mitigate environmental pollution (air, water, and soil). Support climate change adaptation and mitigation activities at community and institutions. Promote climate-smart practices, including sustainable resource use and environmental conservation. Conduct environmental health education and community awareness on climate change impacts and resilience. Participate in disaster risk reduction, preparedness, and response related to climate-induced hazards (e.g. floods, droughts, heatwaves). Monitor and report climate-related environmental health risks and vulnerabilities. Collaborate with stakeholders on environmental protection, climate action, and sustainable development initiatives. Support implementation of national and local environmental and climate change policies and strategies. Identify, assess, and monitor hazardous substances that pose risks to public health and the environment. Conduct inspections of facilities handling hazardous substances to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. Enforce laws and guidelines on the storage, handling, transportation, and disposal of hazardous substances. Promote safe handling practices and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Monitor and control exposure to chemicals, pesticides, toxic wastes, and other hazardous materials. Investigate incidents involving hazardous substances, including spills, leaks, and accidental exposure. Coordinate emergency response and containment measures for hazardous substance incidents. Provide public education and awareness on the health risks associated with hazardous substances. Support safe disposal and treatment of hazardous and medical waste. Co-ordinate the hazardous substance licence applications. Manage the data for hazardous substance companies. Emergency response planning in the development of emergency response plans for food related incidences such as food borne illness outbreaks contamination and recalls. Provide support to District Environmental Health Managers and Chief Environmental Health Practitioner on other related activities. Execute other tasks/duties delegated by the Deputy Director Environmental Health Manager / Supervisor.
