Requirements :

  • MBChB Degree (or equivalent), registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as medical practitioner. At least two years’ post community service experience and at least one additional postgraduate diploma in pharmacology related subjects. Clinical research and teaching in pharmacology will be added advantage.

Duties :

  • Clinical duties and advice on the management of patients: clinical pharmacologist on call for DGMAH, toxicology on call, ward rounds and consults, clinic services, therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) services, toxicology and drug overdose services, regular contact with prescribers to enhance adherence to drug utilisation policy, prevention of treatment errors and promotion of patient treatment compliance. Advise on drug policy in accordance with DGMAH Pharmaceuticals and Therapeutics Committee (PTC) and Gauteng Provincial PTC guidance. Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) consultations, causality assessment and reporting of Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) and active antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). Advise on management of patients and assist in prescribing in special groups (paediatrics, pregnancy, elderly, genetically predisposed, critically ill). Function as an effective team member in the broad context while playing an active role in training other health care workers: undergraduate bedside teaching, bedside teaching of clinical pharmacology and assistance of clinicians in TDM related patient management by interpreting clinical significance of reported drug concentrations, monitor adverse drug effects (including toxicology and poisoning) and drug interaction. Participate in departmental and inter-departmental academic and clinical meetings, case reports, case presentations, continuous professional development (CPD) meetings, while contributing to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Engage in research: own research, research training seminars, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), health research ethics committee (SMUREC). Other relevant duties may be allocated by the Head of Department.
