Requirements :

  • Appropriate qualification and current registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist. A Minimum of three (3) years appropriate experience in Orthopaedic Surgery after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist. Current registration with the HPCSA for 2026/2027. Exposure in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, involvement in research and management skills will be of an added advantage. Skills/ Knowledge/competence: Management experience, Computer literacy (Ms Word, Ms Excel, PowerPoint). Proven experience in Administration, Finance, Education, Research and expertise in Orthopaedic surgery. This experience should be in terms of managing the clinical service, administration, teaching, administration and research. The ability to establish excellent working relationships with other departments including but not limited to nursing and Allied teams (Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy). The capacity to manage change both within the Orthopaedic Surgery and within the emergency unit/theatre/ward round. The aptitude for increasing the “footprint” of the Orthopaedic Surgery service across the CHBAH hospital cluster. Surgical skill set to manage general Orthopaedic patients, and at least one other subspeciality in Orthopaedic Surgery. Fair Understanding of basic Human Resource Finance legislation, regulations policies and frameworks. Project management skills. Teambuilding, People and Interpersonal relations skills. Communication skills (verbal and written). Organizational, Problem-solving and Interventional skills. Highly motivated and enthusiastic to contribute to the Orthopaedic care and services. The ability to work under pressure, lead transformational change in a complex environment and the ability to manage change in the department. A valid driver's license.

Duties :

  • Provide leadership in service, teaching and research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Provide clinical and administrative support to the Head of Department in the efficient delivery of services to patients including outreach to referring hospitals, community health centres and clinics in the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital health cluster. Perform clinical duties in Orthopaedics. Ensure that appropriate, ethical and quality research is performed in the department as part of a wider agenda to explore improvements in health care in the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital area and South Africa as a whole with publication of the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. As part of the university’s responsibility, sufficient and quality teaching must be provided to undergraduates (medical students), postgraduate and fellowship students. Teach undergraduate students in Orthopaedic Surgery. Ensure that clinical services are provided. Provide oversight and strategic support in administrative duties of the department which include planning, budgeting, student assessments and research. Participate in Governance structures and different committees in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Hospital and University. Ensure that quality assurance, including clinical audit, is conducted in the department in line with national core standards. Be a leader in the department of Orthopaedic Surgery of Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, to ensure that that it achieves the strategic goals set by the National and Provincial Departments of Health and the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital. Ensure the employment of the previously disadvantaged individuals in terms of race, gender and disability to enhance equity. The incumbent will manage human, financial, assets and material resources in the Department.
