Requirements :

  • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Surgey. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist.Current registration with HPCSA for 2025/2026. For Grade1. 0- 5 years’ experience as Medical Specialist. For Grade 2. 5-10 years’ experience as Medical Specialist. Grade 3: 10 years and above as Medical Specialist. Competence/Knowledge/Skills: Good leadership skills, excellent communication (verbal and written), ability to resolve conflict and good interpersonal skills. The successful candidate must be adaptable, disciplined, and self-confident. The candidate must be able to work independently and under pressure, they must be aware the need may arise to work beyond normal working hours and work with a diverse team. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team is a must.

Duties :

  • Ability to manage a team of junior and senior doctors. Ability to establish excellent working relationships within the surgical department, other specialties, and allied nursing staff. Ability to perform diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy. Ability in Minimal Access Surgery. Capacity to manage change, both within the HPB team and within the emergency unit/theatre/ward/high dependency unit continuum. Aptitude for increasing the “footprint” of the HPB service across the CHBAH hospital cluster. Surgical skillset to manage emergency general surgery patients, including laparoscopic skills and surgical critical care patients in a high-dependency unit. A Specialist Surgeon is required for the General Surgical Department at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH) as a Training Fellow in Surgical Gastroenterology. The post is a joint post within the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences University of the Witwatersrand.
