Requirements :

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery plus MMed (Ophth) or FC Ophth (SA). Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology with minimum of seven (7) years appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology. Extensive and appropriate experience in all aspects of Ophthalmology- clinical care, teaching, and research. Certificates of service for all periods of employment. Proven management ability, sound communication (verbal and written) skills, leadership skills, decision making and interpersonal skills. Proof of current registration with the HPCSA 2025/2026.

Duties :

  • The department of Ophthalmology is based at Steve Biko Academic hospital and affiliated with the University of Pretoria. This will be a joint academic post. This is a full time, permanent position for a Head of Department Consultant Ophthalmology at Steve Biko Academic hospital. The candidate should have full registration in ophthalmology with the health professional Council of South Africa. Clinical duties include running ophthalmology clinics and theatres, ophthalmology planning and treatment, participation in multi-disciplinary team meetings, supervision and training of registrars. Academic participation includes participation in research activities, lecturing undergraduate and post graduate students in medical and affiliated fields at all training sites. Duties include compulsory overtime and ward cover.
