Requirements :

• Appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Emergency Medicine – MMed (Emergency Medicine) and FCEM(SA). HPCSA registration as an Independent/Public Specialist Medical Practitioner. Proof of current registration with HPCSA (2026/2027). Extensive and relevant experience of working in Emergency Departments of Regional and/or Tertiary Hospitals. Medical practitioners who have completed their specialist training and passed the Part 2 Fellowship Examination in Emergency Medicine but are still awaiting registration with HPCSA may apply. Up to date professional knowledge and skills in Emergency Medicine. Responsible management of human and other resources. Excellent leadership, communication, professional and interpersonal skills.

Duties :

• The incumbent’s responsibilities amongst others will include Assessment, resuscitation and stabilization of acutely ill and injured patients in the Emergency Department. Acceptance of referrals from the lower-level facilities and appropriate disposition of patients to relevant specialties/disciplines and/or higher-level facilities. Supervision and training of junior doctors (registrars, medical officers, community service doctors, and interns) and undergraduate students. Participation in clinical research within the Emergency Department, the hospital and the district. Attendance and participation in relevant administrative meetings such as departmental morbidity and mortality meetings, academic meetings, hospital patient safety incident review meetings and completion of medicolegal documents timeously. Application of good clinical ethos and ensuring the implementation of National Core Standards. Coordination of and participation in all the activities of the department and in the multidisciplinary team approach to patients’ care and management in the Emergency Department. Willingness to participate in the contracted commuted overtime to render after-hour services (nights, weekends, public holidays) that will ensure provision of continuous and uninterrupted care to patients in the Emergency Department. Willingness to participate in all relevant stakeholder engagements within the Sedibeng district health services that will facilitate provision of optimal emergency care within the district. Incumbent alongside other Emergency Medicine Specialist will participate in the clinical, administrative, supervisory, research and academic activities within the Division of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of the Witwatersrand.
