Requirements :

  • Appropriate medical qualification allowing HPCSA registration as a specialist in Internal Medicine. Current registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist. Competencies: Advance clinical knowledge of HIV / AIDS, STI’s and TB. Expertise working with the current South African guidelines. Proven clinical leadership and team management ability. Strong clinical mentoring skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as supervisory skills. Ability to work under pressure. Knowledge and experience in medical teaching and training, financial and procurement management in the public sector, relevant legislation and policies pertaining to the medical field and practice. Be self -motivated. Good computer skills, including proficiency in Excel and Power-point.

Duties :

  • General Medicine: As a consultant, the candidate will be responsible for the clinical management of general medical patients within any of the General Medicine Units at Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital. The incumbent will be expected to lead operational and academic ward rounds, including post-intake, follow-up and grand rounds. Supervises registrars, medical officers, interns and students in patient care and the performance of diagnostic/therapeutic procedures. Manages patients at the Medical Out-patient Department (MOPD). Pulmonology: As a subspecialist, the candidate will be responsible for the clinical management of Pulmonology patients within the unit. The incumbent will be expected to manage patients with acute and chronic respiratory disorders requiring advanced respiratory support including non-invasive ventilation, invasitive mechinical ventilation, High- flow nasal oxygen, and other respiratatory interventions. Assess, diagnose and manage complex pulmonary diseases, including severe asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary infections, pleural disease, pulmonary vascular disorders and respiratory failure. Provide specialist respiratory support as an integral member of the Intensive care Unit (ICU) multidisciplinary team, including the co-management of critical ill patients, participate in ICU ward rounds, and shared decision-making regarding respiratory support, weaning strategies and complex critical care management. Perform and supervise advanced pulmonary procedures, including bronchoscopy, pleural aspiration, intercostal drain insertion, thoracic ultrasound-guided procedures, and other diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, while training junior staff in these techniques. Lead the assessment and management of critically ill respiratory patients, making timely decisions regarding escalation or de-escalation of respiratory support and coordinating multidisciplinary care. Academic: Participation in the academic duties of the Wits Department of Internal Medicine and Division of Pulmonology. Teaching and examining GEMP, Registrar and Senior Registrars at the University and CMSA level. Leads academic, teaching and grand ward rounds as well as departmental and divisional meetings. Performs and supervises departmental research, including MMed and other student projects. Trains and supervises senior registrars, registrars, medical officers, interns and student's tutorial, teaching ward rounds and skills development. Involved in planning, running, supervising and examining undergraduate and postgraduate teaching across academic hospitals and the extended teaching platform. Provides clinical guidance to nursing staff and allied health professional. Managerial and administrative responsibilities within the Department of Internal Medicine of Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital (Both University and Hospital Based). Participation in management committees of Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital. Constructs rosters ensuring continuous 24-hour medical / nephrology coverage. participates in quality improvement and clinical governance initiatives. Contributes to dialysis and transplant operational planning and service delivery.
