Requirements :

  • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Medical Specialist in normal speciality. Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist General Surgery is mandatory. A minimum of three (3) years appropriate experience. Experience of training Registrars in General Surgery. Training of Fellows in the various sub-specialities of General Surgery will be an added advantage. Experience in research, administration, management and finance is desirable. Fair Understanding of basic Human Resource Finance legislation , regulations policies and frameworks COMPETENCIES /KNOWLEDGE /SKILLS: A sound knowledge of government regulations, policies, and acts is needed including the ability to interpret and implement policies. The following are required attributes: People skills; communication; (verbal and written) and interpersonal relations skills; problem-solving and conflict management skills . The candidate should be highly motivated and enthusiastic in the care of patients requiring surgical treatment. The ability to work under pressure, lead transformational change in a complex environment and the ability to lead change management programmes in the department is also important.

Duties :

  • Provide leadership and manage the Surgery department at CHBAH. Perform clinical duties in areas of personal special interest and expertise. Ensure that clinical services are provided. Provide oversight and strategic support in administrative duties of the department which include planning, budgeting, student assessments and research. Comply with the Performance and development System (Contracting, six monthly reviews and final assessments). To collaborate and assist the Director of Clinical Services at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and the Cluster Hospitals whenever needed, in service delivery, teaching and training as an outreach programme. Ensure that appropriate, ethical, and quality research is performed in the department as part of a wider agenda to explore improvements in health care in the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital region and South Africa as a whole with publication of the results in peer-reviewed scientific journals. As part of the University’s responsibility, ensure sufficient and high-quality teaching be provided to undergraduate students, postgraduates students and Fellows. Participate in the Fellowship examinations of the College of Surgeons of South Africa and assist the HPCSA in its accreditation of Surgery care provision in the cluster. Ensure the employment of the previously disadvantaged individuals in terms of race, gender, and disability to enhance equity. The incumbent will manage human, financial, assets and material resources in the Department.
