Requirements :

  • Appropriate qualifications that allow registration with HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Surgery Registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist and current registration with HPCSA for 2024/2025.Current FCS (SA) specialist registration with the CMSA. Ability to manage a team of junior and senior doctors. For Grade 1: 0- 5 years’ experience as Medical Specialist. Grade 2: 5-10 years’ experience as Medical Specialist. Grade 3: 10- 15 years’ experience as Medicals Specialist. Competence/Skill/Knowledge: Ability to establish working relationships within the surgical department, other specialties, allied and nursing staff. Capacity to manage change, both within the Acute Care Surgery (ACS) team and within the surgical emergency unit/ emergency and elective theatre/ general ward/ surgical high dependency unit continuum. Aptitude for increasing the establishment of the ACS service across the CHBAH hospital cluster. Surgical skillset to manage ACS patients, including laparoscopic skills and surgical critical care. Good leadership, communication (verbal and written), conflict resolution and good interpersonal skills. The successful candidate must be adaptable, disciplined and self-confident. The candidate must be able to work independently, under pressure, beyond normal working hours and work within a diverse team. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team. Knowledge of legislation, policies and procedure pertaining to health care users. Computer Literacy. A valid driver’s license.

Duties :

  • Applications are invited for a Medical Specialist position in a specialised ACS unit, based at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Johannesburg. The successful applicant will join a dynamic forward-thinking team of general surgeons with a range of special interests. The ACS unit comprises of: a surgical emergency unit that provides a 24hour service with a dedicated 24hour theatre for emergency surgery/ a high dependency ward which cares for critically ill surgical patients requiring close monitoring and organ support/ a general ward for non-critical patients/ a surgical outpatient department/ elective theatre lists; Supervising the management of, managing ACS patients within a surgical emergency unit, theatre, ICU, high dependency unit, SOPD and wards; Performing, and supervising appropriate surgical procedures; Managing emergency theatre booking lists; Completing compulsory overtime in the surgical department; Training, teaching and supervising of clinical associate students, medical students, interns, medical officers, registrars; Undergraduate teaching ward rounds and theatre sessions; Engaging with surgical staff and management at district hospital within the cluster; Involvement in outreach; Engagement with sub-speciality support on complicated relevant cases; Administrative duties within the ACS unit and department; Co-ordinating logistics and obtaining equipment and pharmaceuticals; Ability to initiate and conduct research; Participate in all divisional, departmental and faculty meetings in order to facilitate effective teaching and research; as well as to enhance continuing professional development, including attendance of training; Perform duties assigned by the Head of Unit of ACS and Head of Department of Surgery; Maintain quality assurance standards and other departmental policies; Comply with the Performance Management and Development System (contracting, quarterly reviews and final assessment.)
