Requirements :

  • Grade 12 plus B.Sc. Hons Degree (NQF Level 8) in Conservation Biology, Natural Science, Rangeland Science, Nature Conservation or relevant qualifications as recognized by SAQA. 3 years’ post qualification relevant experience in the management of terrestrial ecosystems, wetland environments, protected areas field monitoring programs within Biodiversity Management environment. Compulsory registration with SACNASP. Valid driver’s license. Competency: Programme and project management, Scientific methodologies and models, Research and development, Computer aided scientific applications, Knowledge of legal compliance, Technical report writing, Creating high performance culture, Professional judgement, GIS, Data analysis and modelling, Policy development and analysis, Presentation skills, Mentoring. Understanding of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.

Duties :

  • Develop and implement methodologies, policies, systems, and procedures. Monitor programme performance. Perform scientific functions with basic tasks that require some interpretation in the presence of an established framework. Provide evidence-based decision support in the Department by evaluating and providing comment for protected areas management, compliance and enforcement purposes, permitting and environmental authorisation applications. Perform scientific analysis and regulatory functions. Develop working relations with client base under supervision. Create basic public awareness of the science system. Provide accurate data and information as requested. Familiarisation with existing technologies and procedures. Conduct basic and applied research. Publish and present research findings. Research/literature studies on science to improve expertise. Participate in the prescribed mentoring programme of the department. Conduct vegetation, species and ecological monitoring, provide basic analysis of scientific data and compile reports. Assist in the design and planning of ecological monitoring projects. Undertaking research and analysis of the nature and complexities of the physical world to identify discoveries that would improve people's lives and ignite scientific knowledge for society, including facilitation of interdisciplinary advances in ecological science, from regional to global scales.
