Requirements :

  • Grade 12 plus a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or equivalent (as recognised by SAQA). At least 2 years’ appropriate post qualification legal experience. KEY COMPETENCIES: Good legal research, analytical and legal advisory skills, with proven ability to interpret legislation, draft legal documents and provide sound legal opinions. The candidate should possess strong communication, negotiation, stakeholder management and problem-solving and report writing skills, as well as the ability to manage litigation, contracts and complex legal matters within a government environment. Demonstrable professionalism, integrity and the ability to work independently under pressure are essential.

Duties :

  • Provide comprehensive legal advisory services to the Office of the Premier and Provincial Departments by conducting legal research, analysing legislation and case law, and formulating legal opinions and recommendations. Consult with clients to determine objectives, provide advice on legal rights and available courses of action, and ensure that all consultations and advice are accurately documented. Draft and review legal opinions, contracts, service level agreements, submissions, correspondence and other legal documents to support organisational objectives and ensure legal compliance. Manage, coordinate and monitor litigation matters, including liaising with relevant stakeholders and legal representatives. Coordinate and oversee compliance with the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) and the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), while maintaining accurate records and ensuring effective case management.

Attend a DPSA-prescribed SMS Competency Assessment if recommended by the Selection Committee following the interview process. Appointment to an SMS post is subject to successful completion of the Nyukela Pre-Entry Programme (Certificate for Entry into the SMS) offered by the National School of Government (NSG). The successful candidate must provide proof of registration and successful completion of the programme prior to appointment. The cost of the programme is for the applicant's own account.
