Appropriate qualification that allows for registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist Surgeon in a normal speciality or as a recognised sub-speciality Surgical Gastroenterology. A minimum of 3 years’ appropriate experience as a Surgical Gastroenterologist. Knowledge and skills: Assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with surgical gastroenterology, general surgery and related specialities. Teaching, training and supervision of pre- and post-graduate students Supervision of research . Understanding of basic Human Resource matters including Labour Relations. Knowledge of legislative prescripts governing the public service and child health. Managerial and problem solving skills including performance appraisal, monitoring and management. Added advantage: Experience in performing colorectal, hepatobiliary and/or upper gastrointestinal procedures, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervision of MMed or MSC, research publications in peer-reviewed HET accredited journals, completed PhD and management skills will be of advantage.
Duties :

Provide leadership, clinical governance and oversight in Surgical Gastroenterology in the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) Cluster. Render outreach and support services to other levels of care in the CMJAH cluster. Monitor and develop improvement plan regarding clinical output, new services and cost containment strategies. Optimally supervise and train junior personal, including specialist working in the area, Registrars and fellows. Participation in research and academic activities including attendance of academic meetings, assessment of pre- and postgraduate students when required. Direct involvement during surgical procedures in theatres at CMJAH and other hospitals in the CMJAH cluster. Ordering of equipment. Quality improvement and cost containment. After-hour duties will be part of the package. Management of RWOPS. Monitoring of performance and appraisal of staff. Development of staff and succession Timeous response to complaints.
