Requirements :

  • Master's in medicine-Psychiatry: MMED (PSYCH) and a certificate in neuropsychiatry (sub-specialty). Registration with the HPCSA as a neuropsychiatrist. A minimum of 5 years appropriate experience in psychiatry after registration as a medical specialist psychiatrist. Experience in teaching and training and to supervise academic research in psychiatry at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The ability to manage a psychiatric unit clinically and administratively.

Duties :

  • The post is a joint appointment between Weskoppies Hospital and the School of Medicine at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria. Clinical Service delivery: The development and management of clinical teams in a neuropsychiatric unit at Weskoppies Hospital. Evaluation, management and treatment of psychiatrist patients in line with the Mental Health Care Act of 17 of 2002. Clinical governance, risk management, coordination and oversight on psychiatric patients admissions, discharges, down referrals, periodicals and other relevant related areas. The development of services involving inpatient, outpatient and community services. Outreach services. Medico-legal services: Assessments relevant to neuropsychiatry and giving evidence in a court of law and compiling related administrative and medico-legal reports. Forensic observations according to the Criminal Procedures Act 51/1977 and other relevant legislation as part of delegated duties. Budget management. Academic responsibilities include: The teaching and training of under- and postgraduate medical and health care sciences students and members of multi-disciplinary mental health teams. The in-service teaching and training of health care workers and other multisector professionals. Research appropriate to the field and research supervision at postgraduate level. General academic management and administration. Accounting to the executive management of Weskoppies Hospital and the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine at the Faculty of Health Sciences. Recommendations: Postgraduate academic accomplishments beyond the MMed Psychiatry level e.g. PhD or other relevant to the post. research publication, academic, clinical and personnel administration.
